If you like the climate and climbing on Kalymnos but you are bored by the crowds – Karpathos is an excellent choice.
Although the island is known for its strong winds, it can also be a refuge for the body and soul. These winds provide climbers little refreshments, especially during difficult climbs.

Rock type

The rock on Karpathos is limestone of every possible form. There is no formation dominating on the island. You will find here both huge overhangs with tufas that can be found in either Leonidio or on Kalymnos, vertical walls with small edges and slightly overhanging, steep walls with slopers.

The rock is sharp in places, and because it is just the beginning of the climbing season here, the routes are still not slippery. For the same reason, the rock may be fragile in places, which you should pay attention to. Always wear a helmet and belay in a safe way (which means also from a safe place).

Climbing Areas

There are two major areas on the west side of the island: Arkasa and Adia and several smaller ones: Yvonne, Arkasa, Finiki, Kastello, Achata, Pigadia and Afiartis. In total,

~400 routes have been equipped in 34 sectors. You will find them in the Guidebook. New sectors, not described in the guidebook are published on our Facebook profile.
